Uniform trial letter sent 25th June:

Dear Parents/Carers,

As you're aware from September we are very excited that we will be introducing our new OPAL playtime initiative. This programme will encourage children to play creatively and imaginatively - this may at times mean children are climbing, crawling, dancing or running, it could also involve messy play at times.

Therefore, to coincide with this initiative, from September we will be trialling in a change of uniform so children can play without clothes being a restriction for them. We already see lots of girls wearing shorts underneath their dresses/skirts and having spoken to the children in school we know they feel much more comfortable on PE days.

Children will still be expected to come to school wearing their red polo shirts, red sweatshirts or fleeces as before - this remains unchanged. But instead of grey school trousers or skirts, we will be trialling the use of plain, black jogging bottoms or leggings (or plain black shorts or cycling shorts in the summer) and plain, black leather/leather look trainers. In addition to this there will no longer be a different PE t-shirt to wear on PE days.

The rationale behind this is that:

  • Black joggers, leggings and shorts are more comfortable, flexible and easier to wash and dry for parents than traditional school trousers and skirts. With the added bonus that they are cheaper to purchase which will help support our families during these tough financial times.
  • Black leather/leather look trainers which will allow feet to be more flexible than when wearing traditional school shoes. Leather/leather look ensuring that they will still be water resistant which material trainers would not be.
  • No PE t-shirt because children will already be in school polo shirts and joggers/leggings/shorts which are perfect clothes for taking part in PE.

Please be aware that when children are in this new uniform there will be strict expectations that our new policy is adhered to. There should be no side stripes, logos or graphics on the joggers, leggings or shorts and shorts should not be too short. Please see the attached document which shares what would be considered acceptable uniform and what would be unacceptable uniform. If we notice any children wearing clothes that are not part of the uniform we will be contacting parents/carers to see if we can work together and support you in purchasing the correct uniform.

Please rest assured that this will initially be a trial to our uniform policy but we are hoping it will work well. After a term, we will review the changes, conduct a parent consultation and then share information about our plan moving forward ready for a potential full transition to our new uniform policy from September 2025. We hope this will ensure we are giving children plenty of time to grow out of any trousers, skirts and shoes that still currently fit them!

Kind regards,

Ellie Game
