History at Oldswinford

At OCEPS, through our History curriculum we are passionate about our children being: curious about the past, gaining a secure knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world, becoming critical thinkers and understanding the process of change. We aim to offer a History curriculum that teaches our children to appreciate the diversity of societies and to understand their own identity and how things came to be.

We aim for our children to develop skills that enable them to view themselves as historians. Throughout their time with us, we aim for children to develop an understanding of chronology, of key periods and civilisations, identifying how these impacted on the world by asking perceptive questions and making connections and comparisons.

At Oldswinford, we have a focus on British history up until year 4. This is so children gain a secure understanding of what has happened in the country they live in.  From year 5, children then explore what was happening elsewhere in the world at different time periods but then compare what they learn to what was happening in Britain at that time. In Year 6 we then come back to British History by learning about the Anglo Saxons and Vikings which allows the children to bring together all they have learnt.
