Communication letter to parents June 2018

Date: 27th June 2018

Dear Parents / Carers,

Following recent feedback from parents regarding communication between school and parents, we wanted to let you know about the hard work that has been going on ‘behind the scenes’ at school in an effort to improve this area of school life.

The start of the school day is a very busy time for teachers who are eager to get the children into school and begin their lessons. Therefore, from September 2018 we will have two Parent Link Workers on the school playground every morning before school for quick messages which you would like taken to your child’s class teacher – we will be introducing you to them shortly via Parentmail.

This does not mean that teachers are unavailable to speak to. We would simply ask that if you would like a longer discussion with your child’s class teacher or anyone else in school that you contact the school office. A message will be passed to them requesting a telephone call back or a face-to-face meeting. Please bear in mind that teachers are class-based and often have meetings or extra-curricular activities during lunchtime and after school, therefore they will endeavour to return your call within a maximum of two school-working days.

We will also be launching our new and improved school website. The web address will remain unchanged, however, we have worked hard to improve the content and there are many additional features which we are very excited about using and hope that they will make parents lives easier too:

  • ‘Mobile-friendly’ so accessible via your smart mobile phone.

  • Calendar sync so you can pull in school events into your personal calendar on your smartphone, tablet or PC.

  • Video Resource Centre - a personalised channel for school to promote and share videos with you; for example: a demonstration of how long division is taught in school now as we know it’s not how the majority of our parents (or teachers!) were taught.

  • Blogging platform – to be used by staff and children.

  • Newsfeed – this will replace the half termly newsletter and will be updated far more regularly ensuring that the information provided is current.

  • Contact us form – this replaces the old ‘info@oldswinford.dudley.sch.uk’ email address which parents have used in the past. This new ‘contact’ email will be checked on a daily basis, and parents can expect a response within 2 school days.

  • Feedback form – tell us if you like something we do, but please do tell us if you think there is an area of school which you would like to see improved. This email will be checked on a daily basis and parents can expect an acknowledgement within 2 school days. All feedback will be duly considered and responded to if necessary.

  • FAQs – as the name suggests! But please do have a look, lots of useful information in there.

  • School trips – all topic-based trips for the full academic year will be booked on the calendar by the end of September.

  • Class Assemblies – all class assemblies for the full academic year will be booked on the calendar by the end of September.

  • Parents Evening, Open Evenings, Christmas Carol Service, Christmas Fayre, Sports Day, Inset Days – these are already booked for academic year 2018/19. Please see the school calendar.

  • Extra-Curricular clubs and Houses – they will have their own designated page on the website and will updated by representatives of the clubs and houses.

In addition to these improvements, parents still have the school office that can be visited or telephoned (tel: 01384 818790, option 2) for anything that is urgent.

We understand that this is a lot of information in one go, so have created a table (see overleaf) with the various means of communication and the ways we envisage that they should be used. We hope that helps!

Please note: the old general email address (info@oldswinford.dudley.sch.uk) will only be checked on a weekly basis from September 2018, so please do not use this means of communication then on.

For ease of reference, a copy of this letter will be saved in the FAQs page of the Parents tab on the new website.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs F Wooldridge

Business and Resources Manager
